Taliban diplomatic and economic engagement

Overview

The Taliban government is actively pursuing diplomatic and economic engagement to overcome international isolation. While Russia is the only nation to officially recognize the administration, several other entities, including China, Japan, Turkey, and the European Union, are engaging with Kabul on pragmatic matters such as trade, security, and migration.

Central Asian nations are increasingly cooperating to secure trade routes through Afghanistan to maritime ports. Recent diplomatic efforts include a delegation visiting Belarus to strengthen bilateral ties and meetings with Uzbekistan to expand joint investments in electricity, mining, and agriculture. The Taliban is also seeking foreign investment in its mining and infrastructure sectors.

Despite these economic pursuits, international relations remain strained by the Taliban’s policies regarding human rights. UNESCO reports that Afghanistan is the only country where women and girls are officially banned from secondary and higher education, with an estimated 2.4 million girls excluded from schooling. While United Nations officials have urged the international community not to abandon Afghan women, the Taliban maintains that it remains committed to ensuring women’s rights “within the framework of Sharia.”
