UNICEF has issued an urgent warning regarding a worsening malnutrition crisis in Afghanistan, stating that approximately one million children are at risk of death due to severe acute malnutrition. In total, 3.7 million children are suffering from wasting, with children under the age of two accounting for over 80% of severe acute malnutrition cases.

The crisis is being driven by a combination of factors, including economic collapse following the Taliban's return to power, devastating earthquakes, climate-related disasters, and the return of millions of Afghans from Iran and Pakistan. The World Food Programme reports that nearly 14 million Afghans face acute hunger out of a population of over 45 million.

Hospitals are under extreme pressure, particularly in southern Afghanistan, where some facilities report three to four severely malnourished children for every available bed. Nearly 40% of children admitted to hospitals for severe wasting and medical complications are infants under six months old. UNICEF's nutrition program requires $180 million for the current year but has received only 22% of the necessary funding to date.
