Afghanistan inaugurates Wakhan Transit Road to connect with China

The de facto Taliban government has inaugurated the 121-kilometer Wakhan Transit Road in the remote Badakhshan province. Completed after approximately three years of construction at an estimated cost of 365 million afghanis ($5.6 million), the road stretches from the Broghil border area to the Chinese border via the Wakhan Corridor.

Afghan officials, including Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development Abdul Latif Mansour, described the project as having significant political, economic, and strategic importance. The road is intended to diversify Afghanistan’s trade links, providing access to Chinese and Central Asian markets while reducing the country's economic reliance on Pakistan.

Despite the milestone, several obstacles remain. China has not yet opened its border for regular commercial transit, and its established transport networks in Central Asia may limit the corridor's commercial competitiveness. Additionally, security concerns persist, as Beijing has expressed apprehension regarding militant activity in Afghanistan that could impact China’s Xinjiang region.
