Afghanistan-China Wakhan Corridor road development

Overview

The de facto Taliban government has completed and inaugurated a 121-kilometer road project through the Wakhan Corridor in Badakhshan province. The project, costing approximately 365 million Afghanis ($5.5–$5.6 million), includes infrastructure such as four bridges and 66 culverts to connect the Broghil border area to the Chinese border.

Officials state the road is intended to integrate Afghanistan into regional trade networks, providing a transit route to Chinese and Central Asian markets to reduce economic reliance on Pakistan and facilitate the export of natural resources like gold.

However, significant challenges to the corridor’s commercial utility remain. China has not yet officially opened the Wakhjir crossing for regular commercial trade, citing security concerns regarding potential militant activity that could impact the Xinjiang region. Additionally, existing transport networks in Central Asia may affect the competitiveness of this new route.
