Afghanistan opium production increases fivefold in 2026
According to a report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), opium production in Afghanistan increased fivefold in 2026, reaching approximately 1,500 tonnes compared to 300 tonnes in 2025. This surge marks the first significant increase since the Taliban implemented a ban on poppy cultivation in 2022.
Poppy cultivation areas expanded by 330 percent, growing from roughly 10,000 hectares in 2025 to over 43,000 hectares in 2026. The cultivation has spread to 16 of the country's 34 provinces, with the northeast now serving as the primary growing region, accounting for 75 percent of the cultivated land.
UNODC Executive Director Monica Juma stated that sustaining decreases in cultivation is difficult when impoverished farmers lack alternative livelihoods to feed their families. The report noted that many farmers are evading detection by hiding small poppy plots within cereal fields or behind walls. While the Taliban authorities claim to have destroyed more than 22,000 hectares of poppy this year, the UNODC suggests that many plots remain concealed.
Intermediary earnings for the reporting year are estimated at 525 million US dollars, returning to average levels seen between 2018 and 2021. Although production has risen, it remains significantly lower than the levels seen before the 2022 ban.
