Africa aircraft fleet projected to more than double by 2045

Boeing’s 2026 Commercial Market Outlook forecasts that Africa’s commercial aircraft fleet will more than double by 2045, increasing from 755 aircraft in 2025 to 1,625. This expansion is expected to drive a $140 billion aviation-services market, covering maintenance, repairs, and digital services, while creating a demand for 75,000 additional aviation workers.

Passenger traffic is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 5.8 per cent. Intra-African traffic is expected to grow by 6.5 per cent annually, while connections between Africa and the Middle East are forecast to grow by 7.1 per cent per year. Europe is expected to remain the largest international passenger market for the continent.

Of the 1,165 new aircraft projected for delivery by all manufacturers between 2026 and 2045, 870 will be single-aisle jets. The forecast also includes 240 widebody aircraft, 40 regional jets, and 15 freighters. The cargo fleet is expected to grow from approximately 60 to 150 aircraft, supported by demand for e-commerce and agricultural exports. Growth remains contingent on overcoming challenges such as high operating costs, expensive fuel, and restrictive air service agreements.
