Africa CDC Director Urges US to End Uganda Ebola Travel Ban

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Director‑General Jean Kaseya wrote to U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. asking for the removal of Ebola‑related travel restrictions on Uganda. Kaseya said, “There is no reason for the U.S. to continue with this travel restriction,” noting that Uganda has reported no new infections for about a month.

Uganda’s last Ebola patient was discharged on 16 July, starting a 42‑day countdown after which the country can be declared free of the virus under WHO guidelines. The United States currently restricts entry for travelers who have recently been in the Democratic Republic of Congo and, more recently, for some who visited Uganda or South Sudan. Uganda has recorded 20 cases, far fewer than the over 2,400 cases in the DRC outbreak.
