DR Congo Ebola outbreak expands, US cases, vaccine trial
Overview
The 17th Bundibugyo‑strain Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has continued to grow, with confirmed cases now estimated at about 1,926 and deaths at 702. The virus remains concentrated in Ituri province but has spread to five provinces, including Haut‑Uele and Tshopo, and threatens neighbouring Uganda and South Sudan.
Two U.S. humanitarian workers infected in the DRC have been treated in Germany – the first in Berlin’s Charité in May, the second in Frankfurt University Hospital in July – both recovering in high‑containment isolation units. Germany operates seven such facilities, each staffed by around 50 specialists.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has opened a simulation training centre on Nairobi’s outskirts, preparing roughly 100 health workers each month for deployment to the DRC. The centre supports Kenyan Ministry of Health staff, NGOs and international partners.
In the United States, the CDC has extended entry restrictions for travellers from affected areas and allocated emergency resources to protect hospital systems.
A new development is the start of a Phase‑1 trial of the Oxford‑developed ChAdOx1 BDBV vaccine, the first human study of a candidate against the Bundibugyo virus. The trial enrolls 50 volunteers in the UK, with CEPI providing up to $8.6 million and plans for later studies in Uganda.
Response efforts are hampered by a strike of unpaid health workers at Rwampara General Hospital in Ituri, which has halted treatment and investigation activities. The WHO warns that swift, coordinated action is essential to contain the outbreak.
