ECCAS and African Union advance regional digital governance and integration
The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) is working to establish a common data governance framework to secure cross-border data flows and support the regional digital economy. A recent workshop in Brazzaville, following an initial stage in Douala, aimed to harmonize legal instruments and strengthen institutional governance to overcome fragmented national systems and weak interoperability.
In a broader continental effort, African Union ministers are scheduled to meet in Libreville, Gabon, to review progress on the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa (2020–2030). The discussions will focus on creating an integrated African digital market through digital identity, connectivity, and digital public infrastructure. This initiative seeks to address existing connectivity gaps that currently act as bottlenecks for digital identity ambitions.
Private sector investment is also playing a role in the continent's digital evolution, with companies like WIOCC Group and Cybastion committing significant capital toward data centers and fiber optic infrastructure to support these digital transformation goals.
