Africa explores decentralized water systems and carbon markets for climate resilience
South Africa is facing an immediate water crisis driven by aging infrastructure, rapid urbanization, and erratic rainfall. Experts suggest that moving away from purely centralized treatment models toward decentralized infrastructure—such as modular treatment units and membrane filtration—can alleviate pressure on the main network and improve local resilience. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on wastewater reuse to recover high-quality water.
Across the African continent, carbon markets are being viewed as a mechanism to bridge a massive climate financing gap. The African Development Bank estimates that Africa requires approximately $2.7 trillion by 2030 to meet its climate commitments. While the continent contributes only about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains highly vulnerable to climate change.
Uganda’s Minister of Water and Environment, Francis Opolot, noted that carbon markets could transform environmental protection into economic opportunity. Projects involving forest restoration, renewable energy, and improved agricultural practices could generate tradable carbon credits, helping to mobilize private capital for the continent's green economic transition.
