African climate finance and carbon market development

African nations and regional bodies are increasingly looking toward carbon markets to address significant climate finance gaps. In West Africa, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has initiated work to establish a regional carbon market platform. This effort follows a workshop in Abuja intended to validate a framework to leverage international carbon markets to fund mitigation efforts, addressing a projected $294 billion finance gap.

On a broader continental scale, carbon markets are being viewed as a mechanism to mobilize private capital for a green economic transition. While the African Development Bank estimates the continent requires approximately $2.7 trillion by 2030 to meet climate commitments, officials suggest that projects such as forest restoration and renewable energy could transform environmental protection into economic opportunity. This focus on climate resilience coincides with discussions regarding other critical infrastructure needs, such as decentralized water systems to combat water crises in regions like South Africa.
