Africa Finance Corporation and Munich Re launch $1 billion trade finance program

The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and German reinsurer Munich Re have launched a $1 billion risk-sharing program to expand trade finance for African banks. Announced in Lagos, the Unfunded Managed Debt Mobilisation Programme (UMDMP) is designed to help financial institutions overcome liquidity and risk constraints when financing imports and exports.

The first phase of the initiative covers 38 financial institutions across 11 African countries. The program supports essential trade instruments, including commercial letters of credit, trade loans, and trade guarantees, for transactions with a maximum duration of 12 months. Under the agreement, Munich Re will automatically assume a portion of the risk on eligible transactions based on pre-agreed parameters, while the AFC retains a share of the risk.

This revolving mechanism allows the $1 billion capacity to be replenished as transactions mature, enabling the support of successive deals without requiring new commitments for every transaction. The partnership builds on a cooperation between the two entities that began in 2018.
