African economic and mineral sovereignty initiatives
Overview
African financial institutions are implementing new initiatives to strengthen the continent’s economic autonomy and mineral sovereignty. On October 7, 2026, the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) was launched in Mauritius to provide credit assessments that better reflect Africa’s unique economic realities compared to Eurocentric models.
Simultaneously, the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) is expanding its role in the mining sector. During African Mining Week in Cape Town, the AFC announced plans to launch a dedicated mineral exploration development investment company within the next 12 months to address funding gaps and support local value-addition. Franklin Edochie, AFC’s Deputy Director and Head of the Metals and Mining Desk, stated that “continent-led exploration is essential to insulate Africa from global geopolitical pressures.”
The AFC is specifically seeking new investments in iron ore and uranium to diversify its current portfolio of gold, bauxite, copper, and manganese. Edochie noted that combined production from Guinea, Liberia, Mauritania, and Sierra Leone could potentially rank among the world’s top three iron ore producers within the next decade.
Beyond upstream discovery, the corporation is scaling infrastructure commitments in regional ports and power corridors, specifically targeting industrial areas like the Copperbelt and the U.S.-supported Lobito Corridor. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the government is also advancing its national geological mapping program to modernize how investors access its resources.
On October 26, 2026, the AFC expanded its financial reach through a partnership with German reinsurer Munich Re. The two entities launched the $1 billion Unfunded Managed Debt Mobilisation Programme (UMDMP) in Lagos. This risk-sharing program is designed to help African banks overcome liquidity and risk constraints when financing imports and exports. The first phase covers 38 financial institutions across 11 countries, supporting instruments such as commercial letters of credit and trade guarantees.
