African American Heritage Trail preserves Black history on Martha’s Vineyard
The African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard has spent nearly thirty years documenting and preserving the history of people of African descent on the Massachusetts island. The initiative includes historical research, educational programming, guided tours, and commemorative markers across more than 40 recognized sites, ranging from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown.
Founded in 1989 by Elaine Cawley Weintraub and Carrie Camillo Tankard, the nonprofit was established to address the lack of local Black history in school curricula. The organization works to highlight the contributions of individuals who built businesses, established institutions, and challenged discrimination on the island.
