Black history and entrepreneurship on Martha’s Vineyard
Overview
Black entrepreneurship and history on Martha’s Vineyard are characterized by a long-standing tradition of property ownership and community preservation. For generations, Black families have utilized homes and businesses to build economic legacies and create spaces for African American travelers, such as the Shearer Cottage established in 1912.
To preserve this history, the African American Heritage Trail was founded in 1989. The nonprofit initiative works to document the contributions of people of African descent through historical research, educational programming, and commemorative markers at more than 40 sites across the island, including Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.
