African Development Bank and World Bank Expand Funding for Burkina Faso and Gambia
Burkina Faso contributed 100 million CFA (about $167,000) to the African Development Fund (FAD‑17) according to an African Development Bank communiqué dated 2 July 2026. Finance Minister Aboubakar Nacanabo presented the contribution as the country's first to the fund and as part of the New African Financial Architecture for Development (NAFAD) aimed at mobilising more national resources for resilience, infrastructure and jobs.
The World Bank announced that its financing commitment to The Gambia has risen from under $300 million to almost $900 million, as stated by Vice President Ousmane Diagana at the African Caucus 2026 in Banjul. The increased funding targets infrastructure, climate‑resilience and private‑sector investment, including roads, energy, digital development, agriculture and coastal‑erosion mitigation. Both moves reflect a broader push by multilateral lenders to close financing gaps in West Africa exacerbated by the pandemic, the Ukraine war and climate challenges.
