West African financing and AAGP funding push

Overview

Financing and infrastructure development activity intensified across Africa through mid-2026. The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development and the West African Development Bank approved over US$417 million for regional projects, including the Trans-Saharan Highway in Nigeria and gold project equipment in Ghana. Ethiopia received a US$464 million IMF disbursement and an €80 million Italian financing package for economic reforms. Other significant trade finance agreements included the ITFC securing US$1 billion for Burkina Faso, US$250 million for The Gambia, and US$750 million for Djibouti.

The Nigeria-Morocco African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) gained formal endorsement from ECOWAS heads of state in July. The US$25-26 billion, 6,800-km pipeline aims to transport 30 bcm of gas annually to West African nations, Morocco, and Europe. While Morocco has intensified a financing drive—including preliminary discussions with the US Export-Import Bank—securing the necessary international package remains a primary hurdle. The project is expected to bolster regional energy integration and provide a cost-effective alternative to US-imported LNG for the European Union.
