African Development Bank grants €270 million for Morocco airport upgrades

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed a €270 million financing agreement with Morocco’s National Airports Office (ONDA) to fund the Airport Infrastructure Extension and Modernization Program (PEMIA). The agreement, signed in Casablanca, aims to bolster Morocco’s aviation capacity in preparation for major international events and the ‘Tourism Vision 2030’.

The investment targets four strategic hubs: Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez. By 2030, the program intends to increase annual passenger capacity to a total of 25.6 million, including 14 million in Marrakech and 5 million in Agadir. Key upgrades include terminal renovations, expanded air navigation systems, enhanced security equipment, and automated baggage-handling solutions.

Separately, the Casablanca-Settat region is advancing local development, with the Regional Project Execution Agency (AREP) announcing over one billion dirhams in new projects set to begin in October. Meanwhile, economic discussions in Morocco highlight challenges regarding household purchasing power, as stabilized inflation rates have not fully offset previous price increases for essential food items.
