African Energy Week 2026 convenes Southern African utilities and Nigerian energy leaders in Cape Town

The African Energy Week (AEW) 2026, held from October 12‑16 in Cape Town, South Africa, hosted a series of high‑level sessions under the Power Africa Today umbrella. Senior executives from Southern Africa’s leading utilities—including South Africa’s Eskom, Uganda’s Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL), and Zambia’s ZESCO—spoke on grid modernization, transmission upgrades, nuclear baseload, and renewable projects. Eskom highlighted its recent generation stability and the upcoming unbundling of its transmission assets, while UETCL discussed the $50 million Amari Power Transmission Project and the planned Uganda‑Tanzania interconnector. ZESCO outlined open‑access grid reforms and a solar target of 1 GW by 2026.

Nigerian representatives also featured prominently. Prof. Benedict Oramah chaired the Finance Summit, addressing Africa’s $31‑50 billion annual energy investment gap. Dr. Philip Mshelbila of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum contributed to discussions on natural‑gas‑driven growth, and Nigeria LNG’s deputy managing director Olakunle Osobu outlined the Train 7 expansion, set to raise LNG output from 22 Mt to 30 Mt per annum. The forum emphasized expanding energy access, attracting private capital, and strengthening regional power markets across the continent.
