Tinubu reforms drive growth, markets face volatility
Overview
In July 2026 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expanded the Renewed Hope agenda with a 198‑km Bwari Township water supply network linked to the Lower Usuma Dam, promising to extend similar schemes to Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji before his term ends. The 7‑km Tungan Madaki‑Zuba access road to the Abuja‑Kaduna Expressway was awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation for N27.6 billion, aimed at cutting travel time and lowering transport costs for satellite communities. At the COREN Engineering Assembly Tinubu called for tighter, data‑driven regulation, while a partnership with China’s Hyway Group to build 10,000 affordable homes continued. Agricultural support deepened in Zamfara, where Governor Dauda Lawal distributed 72,000 fertilizer bags, herbicides, equipment and mobile phones to boost crop yields and food security, leveraging federal and development‑partner programmes. Ahead of the 2027 elections the ruling APC absorbed over 10,000 former ADC and PDP members in Kebbi, launched a ₦17.5 million renewable‑energy fellowship for youth, and secured unanimous backing from Kano stakeholders. Opposition PDP rallied behind vice‑presidential candidate Alhaji Babangida Modibbo Umaru, while NDC figure Peter Obi called for competent leadership and civil‑society groups urged a pause to large rallies. Financial markets showed renewed volatility: profit‑taking pushed the NGX All‑Share Index down 0.84 % on July 14, erasing about N1.3 trillion in market value, with losses led by PZ Cussons, BUA Cement and Red Star Express. Trading volume rose 19 %, and a modest rebound the next day lifted the index 0.46 %. Tinubu also announced the cessation of raw cocoa exports, citing a 70,000‑ton processing plant under construction in Sagamu and a national grinding capacity already above 120,000 tonnes.
