African finance leaders focus on energy investment and pension fund mobilization
Discussions regarding African development finance are focusing on mobilizing both international institutional support and domestic capital to drive economic growth and energy access.
At the upcoming Power Africa Today conference during African Energy Week 2026 in Cape Town, leaders from the World Bank and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) will address the energy investment ecosystem. GEAPP has raised $100 million toward Mission 300, a World Bank-led initiative aiming to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. The World Bank is also actively engaging in sector reforms, such as a $1.5 billion development policy loan for South Africa's electricity sector.
Separately, at the 7th Annual Africa Pension Supervisors Association Conference in Accra, Ghana, experts highlighted a significant opportunity for domestic investment. While Africa is often viewed as having a capital shortage, pension funds across the continent hold an estimated $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion. Currently, much of this capital remains in sovereign bonds and bank deposits rather than being directed toward the real economy, infrastructure, or private capital projects.
