African infrastructure and energy financing

Overview

Efforts to finance African infrastructure and energy development are gaining momentum through both international partnerships and the mobilization of domestic capital.

At the 2026 Infra for Africa Forum, Africa50 announced that its Infrastructure Acceleration Fund has reached approximately $330 million in total capital commitments, following a $20 million equity commitment from British International Investment. The fund targets sectors including clean energy, transport, and digital infrastructure. In Tanzania, Africa50 also partnered with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and TAQA Arabia to develop a small-scale liquefied natural gas project intended to support industrialization and energy security.

Broadening the scope of development finance, leaders at African Energy Week highlighted the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet’s $100 million contribution toward the World Bank-led Mission 300, which aims to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. Additionally, discussions at the Africa Pension Supervisors Association Conference identified a major opportunity to redirect the estimated $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion held in continental pension funds away from sovereign bonds and toward the real economy and infrastructure projects.
