African financial institutions launch new initiatives to boost economic sovereignty
Significant developments in African financial infrastructure have emerged to strengthen the continent's economic autonomy. The African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) was launched in Port Louis, Mauritius, on October 7, 2026. The agency aims to provide a context-sensitive approach to assessing sovereign creditworthiness, addressing long-standing concerns that Eurocentric financial institutions fail to accurately reflect Africa's unique economic realities and growth potential.
In a separate move to secure mineral sovereignty, the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) announced plans to launch a dedicated mineral exploration development investment company within the next 12 months. Speaking at African Mining Week in Cape Town, AFC officials stated the vehicle is intended to close the continent's mineral exploration funding gap and support local value-addition strategies. This initiative seeks to insulate African resources from global geopolitical pressures by prioritizing domestic discovery and infrastructure, such as regional ports and power corridors.
