African Development Bank funds green hydrogen projects in four nations
The African Development Bank (AfDB) is providing $20 million in reimbursable grants to advance green hydrogen projects across North and Southern Africa. This funding aims to move projects through the critical engineering, financial modeling, and feasibility stages required to reach final investment decisions.
Selected projects include Hyphen Hydrogen Energy in Namibia, which received $5.93 million to support its goal of reaching a final investment decision by 2027. Other recipients include Project Ra in Egypt, the Guelmim Green Hydrogen Valley in Morocco, and the Saldanha Hydrogen DRI in South Africa.
In South Africa, additional support totaling R1.06 billion from European partners is being directed toward green hydrogen, battery supply chains, and critical minerals. This includes R690 million for research, skills, and policy development, and R370 million to create a facility designed to attract private and public investment into the sector.
