Namibia green hydrogen development
Overview
Namibia has initiated several large-scale projects to develop its green hydrogen sector, focusing on both academic research and industrial application. In August 2026, the University of Namibia launched the REALTEST Green Hydrogen Research Project, a 36-month initiative funded by €2.5 million from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space to convert research into commercially viable technologies. Concurrently, Namibia launched the CMB.TECH facility in Walvis Bay, an off-grid plant integrating a 5 MW solar park and a PEM electrolyser, with plans to scale capacity up to 500 MW.
In September 2026, Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy Modestus Amutse called for innovative green financing to support Namibia’s 2030 development targets, emphasizing that ‘A just transition cannot end where creditworthiness ends.’
Regional cooperation has become a strategic priority for industrial growth. At the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, South African Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau outlined a strategy to move toward producing higher-value goods like sustainable aviation fuel and green chemicals. Joseph Mukendwa, Interim Head of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, emphasized that closer integration with South Africa and collaboration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) would allow both nations to compete more effectively in global low-carbon markets.
To support these ambitions, the African Development Bank announced $20 million in repayable grants via the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa to prepare large-scale projects for investment. Namibia’s Hyphen project, led by Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Pty) Ltd, was allocated $5.93 million to cover feasibility studies and technical consultancy. This funding aims to improve project bankability and attract foreign direct investment into Africa’s green hydrogen infrastructure, specifically supporting Hyphen’s goal of reaching a final investment decision by 2027.
