Namibia green hydrogen development

Namibia has initiated several large-scale projects to develop its green hydrogen sector, focusing on both academic research and industrial application.

In August 2026, the University of Namibia launched the REALTEST Green Hydrogen Research Project. Funded by €2.5 million from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, the 36-month initiative aims to convert research into commercially viable technologies. The project emphasizes hydrogen safety, material testing, and engineering innovation, while supporting long-term capacity building through PhD programs for local students.

Concurrently, Namibia launched the CMB. TECH facility in Walvis Bay, described as the continent’s first integrated green hydrogen hub. This facility integrates solar power generation, hydrogen production, and energy storage. The hydrogen produced is intended for local industrial uses, such as generators, dual-fuel trucks, and a hydrogen-powered freight locomotive. Future plans for the site include ammonia production to support maritime decarbonisation, with Siemens serving as the technology partner for electrical and automation infrastructure.
