African investment opportunities and energy financing challenges

Investment in Africa requires a nuanced approach that recognizes the continent as 54 distinct markets rather than a single entity. Specific opportunities exist across various sectors and nations, such as large-scale food production and logistics in Nigeria, agricultural value addition in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, and agribusiness and technology hubs in Kenya. In Egypt, investment needs are focused on irrigation efficiency and food production systems due to limited water resources.

In the energy sector, Africa faces a significant financing gap for its transition to renewable energy. The International Energy Agency estimates the continent requires over $200 billion in annual energy investment through the end of the decade to meet climate goals, yet clean energy investment currently represents only about 2% of the global total.

A major barrier is the high cost of capital; the weighted average cost of capital for renewable projects in 2024 was approximately 12% in Africa compared to 3.8% in Europe. To address this, the African Development Bank’s African Green Banks Initiative aims to use public or concessional capital to de-risk projects and attract private finance into climate-related sectors.
