African renewable energy transition and financing

Africa is navigating complex economic and structural hurdles in its transition toward renewable energy. In Botswana, the launch of the 100 MW Mmadinare Solar PV Cluster has reduced reliance on South African electricity imports, though concerns persist regarding foreign ownership and the flow of commercial returns to Norwegian-controlled firms.

In Zimbabwe, the Turk Mine has successfully utilized a 4.4-megawatt solar plant to lower electricity costs to 8 cents per unit, compared to 19 cents from the national utility, while also reducing coal and water consumption. However, the mine still faces regulatory challenges regarding surplus electricity integration.

On a broader scale, the continent faces a massive financing gap, requiring an estimated $200 billion in annual energy investment to meet climate goals. A primary obstacle is the high cost of capital, with renewable project costs in Africa averaging 12% compared to 3.8% in Europe. To mitigate these risks, the African Development Bank’s African Green Banks Initiative is working to use concessional capital to attract private finance into climate-related sectors.
