African nations evacuate citizens from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks

African governments continue to evacuate citizens from South Africa following waves of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks.

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported the arrival of 105 distressed Nigerians in Lagos, including 82 adults and 23 children. This marks the 13th consular evacuation since June 10, 2026, bringing the total number of evacuated Nigerian nationals to 1,821. The operation has been supported by donations, including $265,854 from the Redeemed Christian Church of God, which helped fund the travel for many returnees.

In Ghana, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa addressed reports of dissatisfaction among some evacuated citizens. While some returnees, such as Kofi Baah, expressed regret over their return due to insufficient financial support upon arrival, Ablakwa stated that the government remains unperturbed. He emphasized that the administration’s priority is the welfare and safety of Ghanaians, regardless of subsequent criticisms from those rescued from conflict or crisis zones.
