South Africa xenophobia, exodus & repatriations, July 2026
Overview
By mid‑July 2026 South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs had processed 53,449 foreign nationals for deportation or assisted voluntary repatriation, over 80 % of them Malawians. Violent anti‑immigrant protests and vigilante attacks that began in early July drove more than 160,000 foreigners to leave the country, with the largest returns to Zimbabwe (≈108,000) and Malawi (≈47,000) and smaller flows to Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Uganda and the DRC. Four migrants – an Ethiopian, a Malawian and two Mozambicans – were killed.
The exodus prompted diplomatic friction; Nigeria and Ghana urged the African Union to address the surge in “Afrophobia”. On 15 July two Ghanaian nationals filed a petition with the International Criminal Court alleging crimes against humanity.
In the following weeks Ghana completed a mass repatriation, flying a final batch of about 900 citizens home and bringing the total evacuated Ghanaian nationals to roughly 1,800.
Violent protests resurfaced in the Thembelihle settlement south of Johannesburg, where armed gangs broke into Malawian homes, beating residents and stealing valuables. The attacks echo earlier anti‑immigrant rallies that set an unofficial deadline for undocumented migrants to depart. Authorities acknowledge the continuing turmoil, pledging improved immigration data and urging police action while facing criticism for perceived inaction.
Former president Kgalema Motlanthe warned that stricter immigration policies risk lawlessness, and Standard Bank Group CEO Sim Tshabalala called for evidence‑based migration policy that recognises migrants’ economic contributions.
