South Africa xenophobic violence and mass migrations
Overview
The anti-immigrant wave in South Africa has intensified, driven by nativist groups like ‘March and March’ that set a September 30, 2026, deadline for illegal migrants to depart. This follows a June 30 deadline that triggered a significant exodus. Recent data indicates more than 178,000 African immigrants have left the country, including over 115,000 returning to Zimbabwe and 56,000 to Malawi. While many departures occur through voluntary repatriation, South African authorities have detained nearly 60,000 undocumented foreigners since the start of the year. The exodus has exacerbated a deepening labor crisis. National unemployment reached 33.6% in Q2 2026, with the Eastern Cape hitting 47.5%.
Diplomatic tensions have escalated. South Africa is seeking approximately $18 million to $18.5 million in reimbursement from nations including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Ghana. Ghana has denied these claims, stating it fully funded its own citizen evacuations. Following waves of xenophobic violence, the Ghanaian government concluded a state-sponsored evacuation of approximately 1,964 citizens, costing a total of GH¢49.72 million. This expenditure included GH¢33.7 million from the government and GH¢16 million in private support, covering chartered flights, medical care, and GH¢10.80 million for reintegration assistance. While the official exercise ended on September 4, some stranded Ghanaians have appealed for a second window, reporting they missed initial screenings due to overcrowding. The Ghanaian government is also pursuing justice for four citizens who died during the unrest.
In Ghana, the Minority in Parliament has demanded a detailed, itemized breakdown of the GH¢49.7 million expenditure to ensure transparency. They are specifically requesting procurement records, including supplier identities, contracts, and payment vouchers for both chartered and commercial flights used during the operation.
