African Swine Fever outbreaks reported in Hungary and Italy

African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks are impacting livestock sectors in Hungary and Italy. In Hungary, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed a new outbreak in Somogy County at a commercial farm with approximately 1,850 pigs. Authorities have ordered the immediate isolation of the property and the culling of the affected herd. Protection and surveillance zones of 3 and 10 kilometers have been established around the site to contain the virus, which has also been detected in local wild boar populations.

In Italy, the virus is threatening the survival of the Cinta Senese, a protected native pig breed in Tuscany. The breed's traditional extensive farming method, which involves grazing in forests, increases contact with infected wild boar. Approximately 300 animals, representing 10% of the global population, have been culled to prevent further spread. Additionally, new ASF cases have been recorded in wild boar across the Liguria and Piedmont regions, with Liguria reporting 1,375 total cases as of August 9, 2026.
