African Transformation Movement seeks Constitutional Court ruling on impeachment interdict

South Africa's African Transformation Movement (ATM) has instructed its lawyers to approach the Constitutional Court for urgent clarification of a Western Cape High Court order that granted President Cyril Ramaphosa an interim interdict stopping public hearings of the Section 89 impeachment process.

The High Court ruling, issued last week, was not unanimous; a dissenting judgment held the President had not shown a proper case for interim relief. ATM, which initiated the Section 89 process, says the decision creates constitutional uncertainty and wants the apex court to determine the implementation and effect of the interdict. The party stresses the President has not been exonerated and that the impeachment accountability mechanisms must proceed.
