ECOWAS and AES begin formal cooperation negotiations in Dakar
ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) have launched formal ministerial negotiations in Dakar, Senegal, to establish a framework for future cooperation. The meeting, held on October 17, 2026, follows the official withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS in January 2025.
To facilitate technical discussions, the two organizations agreed to create joint thematic working groups. These groups will focus on critical regional issues, including the free movement of people and goods, trade, security, infrastructure, and economic integration. The ultimate goal is to develop a draft General Framework Agreement to govern relations between the two blocs.
The discussions were co-chaired by Cheikh Niang, Senegal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs representing ECOWAS, and Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, Burkina Faso’s Foreign Affairs Minister representing the AES. Both delegations emphasized the importance of sovereignty, good neighborliness, and the well-being of West African citizens. Nigeria has also expressed its commitment to regional unity and is working to revive joint commissions with the AES member states. The outcomes of these technical consultations are expected to be presented to ministers at a future session, with a potential ECOWAS summit scheduled for December 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria.
