African Union launches Africa Credit Rating Agency
The African Union has launched the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) in Port Louis, Mauritius. The initiative aims to provide more accurate credit assessments for African countries and businesses, challenging the dominance of the three major American rating agencies: Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s, and Fitch.
According to the African Union, the annual burden of external debt service in Africa rose to 163 billion dollars in 2024, up from 61 billion dollars in 2010. The UN Economic Commission for Africa estimates that risk premiums cost the continent approximately 75 billion dollars annually in increased interest charges.
The move is intended to reduce the financial dependency on international agencies, which the African Union suggests may not always reflect the true economic reality of the continent, potentially leading to higher borrowing costs for infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
