African Union urges peace in DRC amid Kabila-M23 alliance

The African Union (AU) has called for peaceful dialogue and restraint in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following the formation of a new political-military coalition. AU Commission President Mahmoud Ali Youssouf urged all political actors to prioritize reconciliation and respect the country’s institutions, reiterating the AU’s opposition to unconstitutional changes of government.

The call for stability follows the announcement by former President Joseph Kabila of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN). This new movement includes the M23 rebel group and features Corneille Nangaa, former leader of the Congo River Alliance, as a deputy. The alliance has drawn criticism from the Congolese diaspora in Kenya, which warned that Kabila’s partnership with armed rebels could destabilize the democratically elected government and undermine existing peace processes.

The AU emphasized the importance of preserving progress from the Doha and Washington processes and called for the protection of civilian populations. Mediation efforts are currently being supported by Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, alongside facilitators from the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community.
