African women's football teams drop in latest FIFA rankings
Major African women's national football teams have seen significant declines in the latest FIFA Women's World Rankings following the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Nigeria's Super Falcons dropped seven places to 43rd globally, marking the largest points loss of any team in this update. Despite the decline, they remain the highest-ranked women's team in Africa. Their drop follows a campaign where they failed to reach the semi-finals for the first time, and a subsequent loss to South Africa that ended their streak of appearing at every Women's World Cup since 1991.
Ghana's Black Queens fell five places to 65th, dropping out of Africa's top three to fifth place. This decline was driven by a quarterfinal exit against Malawi during WAFCON, which also resulted in Ghana missing automatic qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup.
Other continental shifts include South Africa dropping to 59th, Cameroon climbing to 62nd, Morocco at 64th, and Zambia falling to 70th. Conversely, Malawi saw a significant global rise, climbing 49 places to 104th after reaching the WAFCON final.
