African women's football FIFA ranking shifts
Overview
Following the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), several major African women’s national football teams experienced significant declines in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons dropped seven places to 43rd globally, the largest points loss in this update, after failing to reach the WAFCON semi-finals. Ghana’s Black Queens fell five places to 65th, dropping to fifth in Africa following a quarterfinal exit against Malawi. This exit also resulted in Ghana missing automatic qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Other notable shifts included South Africa dropping to 59th and Zambia falling to 70th. In contrast, Malawi saw a substantial rise, climbing 49 places to 104th after reaching the WAFCON final.
