Afsluitdijk reinforcement completed to protect Netherlands from rising seas
The Netherlands has completed a major reinforcement phase of the Afsluitdijk, a 32-kilometer hydraulic barrier that separates the Wadden Sea from Lake IJsselmeer. Originally completed in 1932, the infrastructure connects the provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland and serves as a critical defense against flooding.
The reinforcement project, which began in 2019, was driven by the need to address climate change, rising sea levels, and more extreme weather conditions. While the specific reinforcement of the 32-kilometer dike was finalized in 2023, the broader modernization of the entire Afsluitdijk system is still in progress. Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch agency for public works and water management, continues to oversee various works that are expected to continue through 2030.
