Agave and mezcal production expand in Mexico

The agave industry in Mexico is navigating a complex balance between cultural heritage and growing international market demand. In Puebla, the sector is showing significant economic potential, with the state currently serving as the second-largest producer after Oaxaca. Puebla boasts over 20,000 hectares of agave, 250 palenques, and an annual production exceeding 650,000 liters, supporting nearly 10,000 direct and indirect jobs across 118 municipalities.

While the expansion of global demand brings increased visibility and income, it also presents challenges. Increased market pressure can lead to environmental strain on land and water resources, as well as risks to genetic diversity if speed is prioritized over traditional maturation cycles. Experts emphasize the need for sustainable practices, including climate change adaptation, traceability in supply chains, and ensuring economic value returns to local communities to preserve the agricultural landscapes and traditions associated with agave cultivation.
