Agios Efstratios achieves energy autonomy through renewables
The Greek island of Agios Efstratios has achieved electricity autonomy through the ‘Ai Stratis – Green Island’ project. The initiative utilizes a hybrid production and storage system to decarbonize the island's energy supply.
The infrastructure includes a 900 kW wind turbine, a 225 kWp photovoltaic plant, and a 2.56 MWh battery storage system. An automated management system coordinates real-time electricity distribution to homes and manages surplus energy. This setup has resulted in a 91% decarbonized energy mix, preventing approximately 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
During winter months, surplus energy is diverted to produce hot water, which is stored in four dedicated reservoirs with a total capacity of 500 cubic meters. The project leverages the island's favorable climate and high levels of sunlight to support its 270 permanent residents.
