Agios Efstratios renewable energy transition
Overview
The Greek island of Agios Efstratios, also known as Ai Stratis, has transitioned toward energy autonomy through the ‘Ai Stratis – Green Island’ project. Financed by the European Union, the initiative utilizes a hybrid system comprising a 900 kW wind turbine, a 225 kW photovoltaic plant, and a 2.56 MWh battery storage system.
An automated real-time energy management system coordinates electricity distribution to the island’s residents. The project has achieved a 91% renewable electricity usage rate, which prevents approximately 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
To manage surplus production, particularly during winter, excess energy is used for thermal heating and stored in four hot water tanks with a total capacity of 500 cubic meters. This system provides residents with low-cost heating without the need for traditional boilers.
