AGNC Investment Corp. maintains high dividend yield amid book value fluctuations

AGNC Investment Corp., a mortgage real estate investment trust (mREIT), continues to offer a dividend yield exceeding 16%, having maintained a monthly dividend of $0.12 since 2020. The company’s portfolio consists of agency-backed mortgage-backed securities (MBS) from entities such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which limits default risk.

However, the company faces challenges related to interest rate volatility. In the third quarter, AGNC's tangible book value (TBV) fell nearly 17% quarter-over-quarter to $7.13 per share, driven by the Federal Reserve's interest rate hiking cycle. While the company recently raised $992 million through an at-the-market offering to bolster its portfolio, analysts note a history of book value per share decay and potential risks of multiple compression as the stock trades at the higher end of its historical price-to-book range.
