Brazil's Golden August campaign expands breastfeeding support across municipalities

The national "Agosto Dourro" (Golden August) campaign, established by Brazil's Law No. 13.435/2017, designates August as a month of promotion, protection and support for breastfeeding. The Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued nursing up to two years or more.

Across the country, municipal health secretariats are organising activities: Várzea Grande and Cerro Branco hold lectures and dynamic sessions in basic health units; the Federal District coordinates information portals, donor‑milk banks and employer‑family support; São Gonçalo, Porto Velho, Maceió, Chapecó and other cities run courses for pregnant women, support groups, donor‑milk collection points and special hospital programming. Local officials such as Maria Janie of Várzea Grande and Graça Cruz of the Federal District stress the need for a strong network to assist mothers facing difficulties. The campaign highlights the health benefits for infants—enhanced immunity, reduced infections, better cognitive development—and for mothers, including lower risks of breast and ovarian cancer and faster postpartum recovery. By mobilising health workers, families, employers and communities, the initiative aims to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates and sustain them beyond infancy.
