Agosto Dourado campaign promotes breastfeeding support and awareness
The “Agosto Dourado” (Golden August) campaign is promoting breastfeeding awareness, emphasizing the importance of family, social, and professional support for both mothers and infants. The 2026 theme, “Breastfeeding for a sustainable beginning of life: Strengthen what works,” focuses on reinforcing positive initiatives and providing quality information.
Experts note that breastfeeding is a new and often challenging process for mothers, especially first-time parents. Common difficulties include physical pain, concerns regarding milk production, and the psychological impact of not meeting breastfeeding expectations. Obstetric nurse and neonatologist Estelita Lima highlights that while initial insecurity is natural, persistent difficulties should not be normalized. She stresses that access to quality information helps mothers recognize satiety signals in their babies and manage the learning process more effectively.
The campaign also addresses the emotional toll on women who face challenges such as low milk supply or health complications, which can lead to feelings of frustration, guilt, or failure. Advocates emphasize that maternal bonds are not defined solely by the act of breastfeeding and that emotional support is crucial for maternal well-being.
