AGR Biogás confronts opposition as Andalusia's first biometano plant goes live

Local residents and municipalities in the Aljarafe region have rallied against a proposed macro‑biogas plant in Benacazón, Sevilla. The Stop Biogás Aljarafe‑Doñana platform, together with mayors such as Pedro Oropesa of Benacazón and councils of Bollullos de la Mitación, Aznalcázar, Pilas, Sanlúcar la Mayor and Almensilla, have organized protests and passed unanimous motions rejecting the project, urging the Andalusian government to issue an official denial.

At the same time, AGR Biogás has inaugurated its first biometano facility in La Calahorra, Granada. The plant processes up to 104,000 tonnes of agro‑livestock waste annually, producing 58 GWh of renewable gas—enough for about 11,000 homes—and avoiding roughly 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The €25 million private investment created around 30 jobs and received ISCC certification. The biometano has been injected into the regional gas grid via Redexis after approval from the authorities, marking a milestone for renewable energy in Andalusia.
