Biomethane plant development and opposition in Andalusia
Overview
In Andalusia, the development of large-scale biomethane facilities has met significant local and municipal resistance despite some successful implementations.
While AGR Biogás successfully inaugurated a facility in La Calahorra, Granada, which processes agro-livestock waste and injects renewable gas into the regional grid, other projects face intense opposition. In the Aljarafe region, the ‘Stop Biogás Aljarafe-Doñana’ platform and several municipal councils have organized protests and passed motions to reject a proposed macro-biogas plant in Benacazón, Sevilla.
Similarly, in Alhendín, the Junta de Andalucía has proposed denying environmental authorization for a biomethane plant led by Greening Solar VIII S. L. This proposal follows an unfavorable urban planning report and widespread contestation from residents and groups such as Ecologistas en Acción, who argue the facility is incompatible with the local landscape.
