Agrani Bank official arrested for embezzling millions in Munshiganj

Police have arrested Sharifuzzaman Sohag, an officer at the Agrani Bank PLC Srinagar branch in Munshiganj, for allegedly embezzling millions of taka from customers. Sohag, who served as a cash officer, reportedly lured clients with promises of 11 to 12 percent interest rates to collect funds, which he then misappropriated using personal seals and bank vouchers.

Following the discovery of the fraud, Sohag went into hiding on September 22. He was apprehended by a joint team of District Detective Branch and Srinagar police at his sister's residence in the Paikpara area of Mirpur, Dhaka. During the arrest, authorities recovered 145,200 taka in cash, mobile phones, a checkbook, ATM cards, and a bank locker key.

Approximately 255 customers have filed written complaints, with individual claims ranging from 1 lakh to 84 lakh taka. Local sources and bank officials suggest the total amount embezzled could exceed 25 crore taka. An audit team from Agrani Bank's head office has been formed to determine the exact scale of the loss, and the Anti-Corruption Commission is also investigating the matter.
