Agrani Bank embezzlement in Munshiganj
Overview
An investigation into large-scale embezzlement at the Agrani Bank PLC Shrinagar branch in Munshiganj began following the arrest of cash officer Sharifuzzaman Sohag. Sohag allegedly misappropriated funds by promising customers interest rates of 11 to 12 percent and using personal seals and bank vouchers to collect money. Approximately 255 customers filed complaints, with some estimates suggesting the total loss could exceed 25 crore taka.
The investigation expanded as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and local police arrested six individuals, including bank officials Md. Jinnah Hossain, Rezaul Huq, Md. Sharif Uddin, cash officer Md. Shahiduzzaman, and security guards Ranju Ahmed and Abdul Hai. The ACC confirmed the misappropriation of approximately 89.4 million BDT through the use of fraudulent FDRs, forged checks, and fake deposit slips. While the confirmed amount is 89.4 million BDT, complainants maintain the total stolen exceeds 250 million BDT. The suspects have been temporarily suspended as authorities continue to determine the full impact on the estimated 200 to 300 affected customers.
