Vietnam's banks face deposit rate disputes and scam warnings
Agribank disclosed its current deposit rates, ranging from 0.2% for non‑term accounts to 6.0% for 24‑month savings, and launched a prize‑draw promotion offering up to 4.5 billion VND in rewards for deposits of six months or longer. The bank also cautioned customers about fraudulent schemes promising unusually high online savings yields, which often involve fake QR codes, spoofed bank staff, and pressure to transfer money.
In a separate case, an elderly customer who opened eight 12‑month savings accounts with a Vietnamese bank between 2018 and 2019 sued, alleging the bank’s automatic renewal at prevailing rates deprived him of the original 6.6‑6.8% interest. The court ruled that the bank’s practice of automatically extending deposits and applying the current rate complies with regulations, rejected the claim for additional 9 million VND in interest, but waived the appellant’s court fees.
