Vietnam banks H1 2026: Growth, debt risks, and capital moves
Overview
Vietnam’s banking sector maintained strong momentum through H1-2026, characterized by record deposits and significant asset expansion. Total deposits reached 17.44 quadrillion VND by June, driven by a 7.1% rise in residential deposits. VPBank led the sector in asset growth, adding approximately 242,000 billion VND to reach 1,502 million billion VND, outpacing state-owned giants BIDV and Agribank. Profitability remained robust, with OCB reporting a 30% profit increase and ABBank posting 3,016 billion VND in pre-tax profits. By Q2 2026, net profit for 27 banks reached 88 trillion VND, an 18% increase from the previous quarter. Liquidity pressures eased in September 2026 as capital mobilization outpaced credit growth. As of August 22, VND mobilization increased by 8.77% since the start of the year, exceeding the 8.38% growth in credit outstanding. Interbank interest rates showed signs of cooling, with overnight rates at 1.5% per annum as of September 10. Despite this, deposit interest rates remain high due to strong demand for capital and a significant gap between credit and deposits. Savings rates continue to show wide variations. For 12-month terms, ACB and Sacombank offer high yields of 7.8% and 7.5% respectively, while the Big4 group maintains rates around 6.8%. For 6-month terms, ACB leads at 7.6%, while BVBank offers approximately 8.6% for first-time online depositors. Some institutions, including NCB and Sacombank, are also offering promotional real estate rewards for high-value depositors. By mid-September 2026, banks have increasingly promoted certificates of deposit (CDs) as high-yield alternatives to traditional savings. VPBank has listed CDs with rates reaching up to 9% per annum, while Vietcombank offers a 6-month CD at 7.5%, notably higher than its 6.6% online savings rate. However, these products may carry stricter liquidity conditions and different early withdrawal rules.
