Vietnam banks H1 2026 profits diverge, BVBank spikes
Entities: Techcombank · VPBank · LPBank · ABBank · BVBank
Overview
Vietnamese banks kept 12‑month term‑deposit rates near or above 6.5 % through mid‑July 2026, and competition pushed effective yields on many 6‑12‑month products above 9 % by late July. Institutions such as VikkiBank and HDBank advertised rates exceeding 9 %, while others offered 8‑8.8 % yields with added incentives.
The sector’s earnings remained split. Saigonbank’s pre‑tax profit fell 72 % to VND 48 billion and Eximbank dropped 51 % to VND 730 billion, while KienlongBank rose 15.8 % and Vietbank posted a 79 % jump. ABBank’s recent capital increase to about VND 16.07 trillion underpinned its digital‑transformation plans.
A striking outlier emerged as BVBank recorded a 486 % surge in pre‑tax profit, reaching VND 547 trillion, the sector’s strongest gain. ABBank followed with an 80 % rise to VND 3,016 trillion, and other banks such as PGBank, NCB and Vietbank posted gains of 66‑79 %. The profit boom translated into higher staff compensation; LPBank posted the steepest salary growth, while VPBank’s average pay slipped amid a headcount rise.
Overall, the first half of 2026 highlighted a rapidly shifting Vietnamese banking landscape, where intense deposit‑rate competition coexists with pronounced profit divergence and selective outperformance by a few institutions.
