Agricultural and water security initiatives launched in Peru and Mexico
In Peru, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) is focusing on creating opportunities for rural youth to encourage them to remain in the agricultural sector. During an International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) dialogue, Minister Marco Vinelli emphasized that providing access to water, technical assistance, financing, and market connectivity is essential for young entrepreneurs to build lives in their local communities.
In Mexico, the government is advancing the construction of the El Tunal II dam through the National Water Commission (Conagua). This strategic project aims to provide sustainable water to nearly 700,000 people in the capital of Durango by capturing rainwater from the Tunal River. The initiative is designed to reduce reliance on aquifers, allowing them to recover over the next 50 years, while supporting the needs of the local population, agriculture, and industry.
